The last unregistered student union at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has dissolved after all committee members resigned, reducing the number of such bodies from nine to two.

The demise of Chung Chi College’s student union followed a meeting on Saturday evening during which provisional administrators and relevant representatives said the body could no longer function and that they would resign.

Only two college student unions remain, both of which have already registered with the police as societies.

The 62-year-old student union of United College said in a post on social media earlier this month, that it had faced challenges operating over the past two years.

It said the university had forbidden the student union from acting in its official capacity and had withdrawn other facilities previously available to it before it registered as a society with the police.

“Even though the student union has facilitated the procedures, we suspect that students would still have the room to participate in any activities and express opinions. We are deeply confused and feel pity about this,” it said.

CUHK is the only university in Hong Kong that offers a collegiate system for full-time undergraduates. Students are divided into nine colleges, which provide accommodation, dining halls, pastoral care and whole-person education.
