Israel is using white phosphorous over civilian homes in Lebanon, Human Rights Watch has warned.
The organisation said it verified and geolocated seven images showing airburst white phosphorus munitions being deployed over a residential part of the southern Lebanese village of Yohmorand civil defense workers responding to fires in at least two homes and one car in the area.
The white-hot chemical substance can set buildings on fire and burn human flesh down to the bone. Survivors are at risk of infections and organ or respiratory failure, even if their burns are small.
“The Israeli military’s unlawful use of white phosphorus over residential areas is extremely alarming and will have dire consequences for civilians,” said Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch.
“The incendiary effects of white phosphorous can cause death or cruel injuries that result in lifelong suffering.”
Meanwhile, Iran has elected Mojtaba Khamenei as its new leader, more than a week after his father was killed in an airstrike.
The 56-year-old was chosen to become the next supreme leader on Sunday evening, despite Donald Trump’s insistence that he should have a say in the appointment.

Leavitt was interviewed by Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures about the possibility of seeing American boots on the ground in the Middle East as the campaign develops.
“Mothers out there are worried that we’re going to have a draft, that they’re going to see their sons and daughters get involved in this,” Bartiromo said, seeking assurances and noting that the fight has solely consisted of an exchange of airstrikes so far.

Mojtaba Khamenei 'wounded', says Iranian state media
Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei has been referred to as “wounded” on Israeli state media.
The term used to describe a person wounded in war is “janbaz” but reports have not clarified when or how Mr Khamenei sustained the injuries.
His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli strikes on 28 February. Mojtaba Khamenei’s mother, wife and daughter were also killed in the attack.
Hegseth warns ‘this is only the beginning’ of war with Iran and there will be more US casualties
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said “this is only just the beginning” of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran and warned that more American casualties can be expected.
Hegseth was speaking to CBS News’s 60 Minutes after Mojtaba Khamenei was named as Iran’s new supreme leader following the death of his father in the initial wave of airstrikes, global oil prices surged past $100 per barrel, and a seventh U.S. servicemember was killed.
Asked by host Major Garrett on the likely duration of the war, Hegseth said: “Oh, we’re very much on track, on plan. We’re not flying a mission accomplished banner – like George W Bush on an aircraft carrier. We’re not doing that and we haven’t done that.
“But we can be clear with the American people that this is not a fair fight. And that’s on purpose. Our capabilities are overwhelming compared to what Iran’s are.”

Two medics killed in Lebanon, health authorities report
Two medics have been killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, state media reported on Monday.
Health authorities said that the healthcare workers were killed as part of the ongoing conflict.
Nine health care workers have been killed so far and 16 others wounded including paramedics from the Lebanese Red Cross, according to the country’s health ministry.
