Europe seeks Nato-style pact, higher army cap for Ukraine

US secretary of state Marco Rubio (C) attends a discussion with a delegation from Kyiv to end the Russia-Ukraine war in Geneva on Sunday

BRUSSELS: Europeans have submitted a modified version of the US' peace plan for Ukraine that pushes back on proposed limits to Kyiv's armed forces and territorial concessions, according to a document seen by Reuters on Sunday. The document, prepared for talks on the plan in Geneva, proposes that Ukraine's military be capped at 800,000 “in peacetime” rather than a blanket cap of 600,000 proposed by the US plan. It also says “negotiations on territorial swaps will start from the Line of Contact”, rather than pre-determining that certain areas should be recognised as “de facto Russian”, as the US plan suggests. The counter-proposal was drafted by the so-called European E3 powers – the UK, France and Germany, a source said. The document takes the US proposal as its basis, but goes through point by point with suggested deletions or changes. ..

On high prices, Epstein and even Venezuela it’s clear: Trump has a Bidenesque messaging problem

Joe Biden spent roughly three of his four years in the White House trying to sell Americans his view of his presidency: An economy that was roaring back to normal after the Covid crash, and a country once again respected on the world stage, helmed by a president just as spry and fit for duty as his opponent.
In the end, voters did not believe him. A disastrous debate with Donald Trump blew the door open for speculation about his mental faculties, while consumers still felt squeezed by high prices on gasoline and Covid-era inflation and price hikes on other commodities that stretched their paychecks thinner than in years past. On the foreign policy side, his image was further marred by the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which involved one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. forces in the country in years as well as a retaliatory U.S. strike that caused significant civilian casualties.
Now, his predecessor faces a starkly similar scenario. One year into Trump’s second term, the president is b..

New Musk policy on X unwittingly exposes MAGA influencers as foreign trolls

Changes at Elon Musk’s X may have unwittingly revealed that many MAGA accounts are actually foreign actors profiting from the sowing of division in the U.S.
On Friday, X introduced a feature called “About This Account,” which allows other users to see where an account was based when it joined the site, how often it's changed its username, and by what means they downloaded the X app.
Once the feature was live, political rivals began to dig into each other's accounts, and a trend began to emerge — many popular MAGA and right-wing influencer accounts were not based in the U.S.
The discovery led Democratic influencer Harry Sisson to call it “easily one of the greatest days on this platform,” the Daily Beast reports. “Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of Democrats, like myself and many on here, who have been warning about this”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there were “signals that President [Donald] Trump's team is hearing us”.
Ukraine and its European allies had expressed concern over the leaked proposals, seen as favouring Russia and welcomed by Vladimir Putin as “the basis” for settlement. Zelensky had said Ukraine “might face a very difficult choice: either losing dignity, or risk losing a key partner”.
Watch: Trump says Ukraine proposal is not his final offerSpeaking to reporters late on Sunday, Rubio said the negotiating teams in Geneva had had a “very good..

Israel strikes Hamas targets: Airstrikes launched on Gaza amid fragile ceasefire; over 20 killed

Palestinians inspect the damage to a house targeted by an Israeli strike in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, Saturday (AP photo) Israel launched airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza on Saturday, raising questions on the fragile ceasefire that began on October 10. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said five senior Hamas members were killed. Gaza health officials reported 24 deaths and 54 injuries, including children, as reported by Associated Press. The strikes followed reported gunfire at Israeli troops and came shortly after the UN Security Council approved a US-backed plan for Gaza’s security and governance. The plan authorises an international stabilisation force, sets up a transitional authority overseen by President Donald Trump, and outlines a possible path to Palestinian statehood. Israel has carried out similar strikes after previous alleged ceasefire violations. Health officials said 33 Palestinians, mostly women and children, were killed over a 12-hour period..
