Hungry bear getting ready to hibernate broke into Nevada home and attacked elderly couple inside

An elderly couple was injured after a bear broke into their home near the California-Nevada border in search of food before hibernating for the winter.
At the Stateline, Nevada, property near Lake Tahoe, an 87-year-old man went into his garage at around 4:30 a.m. and unexpectedly came face to face with the bear as it searched for food, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
As the man backed away, the bear scratched his hand and followed him into the house. Inside, the creature also scratched the 87-year-old woman. The bear eventually left the home, the department said. It’s not immediately clear how long the animal was inside.
The pair sustained “minor hand injuries” and were treated at the hospital. They’ve since been released.
“We are grateful that these individuals sustained minor injuries and are okay,” Shawn Espinosa, Game Division Administrator for the department, said in a statement. “Bears are still experiencing hyperphagia, or a phase where they build up as many cal..

Trump says US plan to end Ukraine war not ‘final offer’ for Kyiv

Trump says US plan to end Ukraine war not 'final offer' for Kyiv2 hours agoShareSaveJaroslav LukivShareSavePA MediaPresident Donald Trump has said a US plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war is not his “final offer” for Kyiv, after Ukrainian allies voiced concerns over proposals.
Earlier on Saturday, leaders from Europe, Canada and Japan said the plan had elements “essential for a just and lasting peace”, but would “require additional work”, citing concerns over border changes and caps on Ukraine's army.
On Sunday, security officials from Britain, France, Germany, the US and Ukraine will meet in Geneva, Switzerland.
President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier warned Ukraine faced “one of the most difficult moments in our history” over US pressure to accept the plan seen as favourable to Moscow.
Trump has given Ukraine until 27 November to accept the 28-point plan, while Russia's President Vladimir Putin said it could be the “basis” for a settlement.
When asked on Saturday whe..

UN climate talks fail to secure new fossil fuel promises

UN climate talks fail to secure new fossil fuel promises2 hours agoShareSaveGeorgina RannardClimate and science correspondent, Belém, BrazilShareSaveEPAFollowing bitter rows, the UN climate summit COP30 in Belém, Brazil has ended with a deal that contains no direct reference to the fossil fuels that are heating up the planet.
It is a frustrating end for more than 80 countries including the UK and EU that wanted the meeting to commit the world to stop using using oil, coal and gas at a faster pace.
But oil-producing nations held the line that they should be allowed to use their fossil fuel resources to grow their economies.
The meeting takes place as the UN says it fears global efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels have failed.
A representative for Colombia furiously criticised the COP presidency for not allowing countries to object to the deal in the final meeting on Saturday, known as a plenary.
“Colombia believes that we have sufficient scientif..

Abortion is illegal again in North Dakota after Supreme Court upholds ban

Abortion has been reinstated as illegal in North Dakota after the state's Supreme Court failed to secure the necessary majority to uphold a judge’s decision that had struck down the ban last year.
Performing an abortion is now a felony crime, though patients are specifically protected from prosecution. Doctors found in violation could face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The court's five justices were divided, with three agreeing the ban was unconstitutionally vague under the state constitution, while two deemed the law constitutional. North Dakota's constitution mandates that at least four of the five justices must concur for a law to be declared unconstitutional – a stringent requirement that ultimately prevented the lower court's ruling from being affirmed.

Jets star Kris Boyd was shot after argument about what he was wearing, NYPD says

A stranger shot New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd in the abdomen after taunting him about his outfit, police say.
Boyd, two of his teammates and a third friend headed to Asian fusion hotspot Sei Less in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday to celebrate a friend’s birthday. As they were heading inside the restaurant, a group of men started “to chirp them” about their fashion choices, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told Pix11. The strangers then asked: “Do you think you’re better than us?”
The football player and his friends spent about 10 minutes inside the restaurant before deciding they didn’t like the vibe and left, Kenny said. That’s when, just after 2 a.m., the strangers confronted Boyd’s group again, once again taunting them about their outfits.
An argument quickly turned physical — and one of the strangers pulled out a gun, Kenny said. “Pretty chaotic scene. Probably about 50 to 60 people out there. People are running,” the chief of detectives added.
EMS responded and transporte..

Zelensky warns Ukraine risks losing US support over White House peace plan

Zelensky warns Ukraine risks losing US support over White House peace plan47 minutes agoShareSaveJaroslav LukivShareSaveZelensky/TelegramPresident Zelensky addressed the nation on Ukraine's Dignity and Freedom DayUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Kyiv risks losing US support over a White House plan on how to end the war with Russia.
Addressing the nation on Friday, Zelensky said Ukraine “might face a very difficult choice: either losing dignity, or risk losing a key partner”, adding that “today is one of the most difficult moments in our history”.
The widely leaked US peace plan includes proposals that Kyiv had previously ruled out: ceding eastern areas it now controls, significantly cutting its army size, and pledging not to join Nato.
These provisions are seen as heavily slanted towards Russia, whose President Vladimir Putin said the plan could be a “basis” for peace settlement.
At Friday's meeting with his security cabinet, Putin said Moscow had receiv..

Steve Rosenberg: Putin uncompromising as leaked plan reaches Moscow

Steve Rosenberg: Putin uncompromising as leaked plan reaches Moscow6 hours agoShareSaveSteve RosenbergRussia editorShareSaveEPAIt was quite a contrast.
On Thursday, a US Pentagon delegation was in Kyiv. They were talking to President Zelensky about a draft plan to end the war in Ukraine.
The same day, on Russian state TV, President Putin was in military fatigues. He was talking to his army chiefs about fighting on.
“We have our tasks, our goals,” the Kremlin leader declared. “The chief one is the unconditional achievement of the aims of the special military operation.”
The Izvestia newspaper called President Putin's visit to a command post “a signal to America that he's prepared to negotiate on Ukraine, on Russia's terms”.
Which brings us back to the peace plan.
On Friday night, President Putin said he had seen the US settlement plan for Ukraine.
Addressing a meeting of the Russian security council in Moscow, he described the American proposals as a “modernised” version ..

Trump proposes expanding offshore drilling in California and Florida despite risks

The Trump administration has announced new oil drilling operations off the coasts of California and Florida, marking the first such expansion in these regions in decades. This move, intended to boost U.S. oil production, has drawn criticism from those who warn it could harm coastal communities and ecosystems.
The oil industry has actively pursued access to new offshore areas, including Southern California and off the coast of Florida, arguing it would enhance U.S. energy security and create jobs. Federal regulations have prohibited drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, which includes offshore Florida and parts of Alabama, since 1995 due to concerns about oil spills. In California, despite existing offshore rigs, no new federal leasing has been permitted since the mid-1980s.
Since taking office for a second time in January, Trump has systematically reversed policies aimed at slowing climate change, instead pursuing what he calls U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. Trump, who..
