Some license plate cameras equipped with special sensors can collect a lot more information about drivers than previously thought, according to a new report.
One product, defense contractor Leonardo's SignalTrace system — which produces sensors that can be fitted to existing license plate readers — can collect unique identifiers attached to phones, AirPods, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices, according to 404Media.
That would potentially allow law enforcement the ability to not only collect a license plate and identify who the car is registered to, but also collect information identifying the driver and anyone else in the car carrying a phone or similar device.
SignalTrace also advertises that it can detect non-contact RFID devices, like air-pressure sensors, work badges, or even pet microchips.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday deflected questions over the Justice Department’s decision to interview Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of helping the financier sexually abuse underage girls and is now serving a lengthy prison sentence.
Trump instead lashed out at old grievances following a new report from his intelligence director aimed at casting doubt on long-established findings about Moscow’s interference in the 2016 election.
Trump is under pressure from conspiracy-minded segments of his political base to release more about the Epstein case. He’s tried to move on, which Democrats say is because of his association with Epstein. Trump has denied knowledge or involvement of Epstein’s crimes and said he ended their friendship years ago.
Also Tuesday, Trump said after meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House that the two countries had agreed on a trade deal.

BBC on Luzon Island as super typhoon hits PhilippinesTyphoon Fung-wong has made landfall in the Philippines, where more than 900,000 people have been evacuated.
The storm was upgraded to a super typhoon, with sustained winds around 185 km/h (115mph) and gusts of 230km/h (143mph).
The BBC's Jonathan Head is on Luzon Island, and says there is “debris flying everywhere” and “people are sheltering in any solid building they can find”.
